They want a portion of the river bikepath to curve in and go through their studio and then loop back to the river path. Such a loop will slow down your ride, probably have pedestrian crossings, might have speed bumps and is subject to any number of unknown annoyances NBC decides to throw in. Most importantly, construction for this diversion will likely become a bureaucratic debacle for NBC and slow down contruction of the bikepath as a whole.
