Whoa!  I just found out about a continuously variable internal hub - http://www.atcnuvinci.com/.

Reviews at http://phil.veloblog.ch/post/7/333 and http://bikehugger.com/2007/07/mondo_nuvinci_review.htm.  Looks very cool, but um, the thing is over 9 lbs!

Killer stuff !!

Looks like something we'll have to re-engineer out of titanium in order to be attractive...

Thanks, Shane !

I googled a bit.  Seems replacing the large steel bearings with ceramic bearings is probably ideal if they're trying to save weight (40% lighter, supposedly).  Still leaves you around 5 1/2 lbs though. =)

Woah - http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11246082

I'm guessing that we're going to start seeing bikes with these hubs.  Oh, and they managed to reduce the weight by just over half a pound on the 2008 models.

BTW, on an impulse, I ended up buying one of these hubs on eBay.  Guess it's finally time for me to learn how to build a wheel.

Apparently Motortrend wrote an article titled, "The NuVinci Code: At Last, a Tranny with Some Balls" - http://www.motortrend.com/features/editorial/112_0609_technologue/.
