Hmrph.  No...  I was actually going to buy it for myself, except the bike was a bit small for me.  Since Kate was looking for a city bike, she ended up buying it right from under me.  Sneaky, that one.  So now I am relegated to lusting after it and taking photos of it.

No, it's a chain guard or something. It's like a forcefield for the chain. IE the chain is inside the rubber band looking thing.

Well, I didn't have a choice really.  I had liked the Van Dessel Super Fly, but Kate's bike was too small for me.  After obsessing about it for a while, I eventually found a larger frame on eBay (and it came with the crankset).  Overwhelmed by the ubiquitous logos (and inspired by a guy sanding a steel frame at the Bikerowave), I ended up removing the powder coat off (keeping just the name part), sanding and hand polishing the aluminum frame (can't begin to tell you what a giant pain that was - never again). =)

The "rubber band" thingie is the Hebie Chainglider that I bought from http://www.bikefront.com/products/chainguards (super friendly and helpful guys, and apparently the only distributor of Hebie products in the U.S.).  It's a fully enclosed chaincase (can't recommend it enough).  It's great for me because I tend to take my bike down to the beach and bury the tires in the sand.  It keeps the dirt and sand from the chain (same reason why I elected to get an internally "geared" hub and sealed freewheel), and it also meant that I can actually lube the chain up with oil (*gasp*) and not have to worry about getting it on my legs or clothing.

Very happy to finally be done with it.

p.s. for those with a keen eye, yes, I ended up re-lacing the front rim with a 3x1 pattern instead of the hybrid crow's foot (not a great pattern for a front disc brake).

you did a great job on stripping the bike. did you ever try using a chemical strippper to remove the factory paint? did you apply a clearcoat on the bare polished surface?

Yeah, bought this stuff called "aircraft coating remover."  FYI, if you ever plan to use it, get the aerosol.  The original aluminum frame was powdercoated, and I can't imagine sanding all of the paint off even if it was steel.  So the bulk of the paint was chemically stripped off.  I also used a dremel with a steel wire brush attachment to get the stubborn paint bits off the joints.  Then the frame was sanded with 400, 600, 800, then 1000 grit sandpaper.  Polishing was done with Mother's Aluminum Polish and an old sock.  Clearcoating was done with urethane aerosol.  I'm happy with the result, but the process was mind numbing.
