My friend Christy(UT) is planning to tour from SF to LA sometime in the end of December.  Enzo, there isn't a chance I would want to ride 114miles/day for 4 days with gear.  I'd be much more interested in a 8 to 10 day tour.  This allows extra time to enjoy the trip and camp without stressing about daylight.

Get an e-bike.  They are very good for when you are tired and want to take a break.  You'll only have to recharge the battery 4 or 5 times per day.  Charging takes 2-6 hours, so you will have to sleep in the cafes you are mooching electricity from.  But hey, then you don't need to take a tent!  E-bikes weigh more and will go down hills faster than conventional bikes.  They cannot go up hills faster than an Enzo or a Rich but they will drain the battery trying.  Another great feature is that they cannot tolerate heavy rain, so enjoy lots of rain breaks, especially during the San Francisco fall.  E-bicyclists can take advantage of bike lanes but remember to cap your speed at 20 mph in accordance with state law and enjoy watching your friends ride away as they take advantage of a sweet following wind.

E-bikes are wonderful.  Let's get a shop-e-bike.

what just happened here...?  I'm more on board with a slower week or longer pace to really soak in the surroundings and such.
