Hey folks,

Sophia here - I'm a recent transplant from Santa Cruz and am looking forward to meeting all you crazy bike people!

I am also looking to do a tour up the coast at some point in the next few months (wind, I know, I might reconsider and bike down instead).  LA to Santa Cruz/San Francisco.  Let me know if you are interested in making the trip or already have plans in the works.

Bit o'bout me: geography student at UCLA, formerly studied history at community college; I've meandered my way via bicycle through Medditerranean Europe, and recently did a tour through the South (thank you Adventure Cycling!); I've never built a bike and want to change that; WWOOFing is awesome; I enjoy experimental cooking on various devices and in sundry side-of-the-road locations.

I should be in the Santa Monica area for about the next two years, so lets get cozy and go on some rides!!!

Cheers,
~S

Sophia,

Fantastic, we're always looking for new volunteers! You don't need to know anything about wrenching -- we'll train you -- but if you do have some mechanic skills, that's even better. Volunteering is a great way to get to know the crew at BRW, and one of the fastest ways to learn enough to build your own bike.

Weeknights (Mondays thru Thursdays) are currently the best times for new volunteers, as we're not swamped with customers then so we can provide some learning opportunities. (But if you can't make weeknights, we're happy to have you come in on the weekends too.) Just drop by at the beginning of a shift, fill out the volunteer form, and we'll get you started!

Experimental cooking on various devices sounds interesting. I'd like to cook bacon on a 3-speed hub. I'm going to have to think about this for a while.

Maybe we'll have to initiate some portable-stove building too... Or design a cooking device that can be made out of bike parts, in case eating become more important than transportation on a bike-tour-gone-awry.  The real question: where would we find the bacon?

I might have to reasess my priorities here.

...

I'll try and come by tomorrow afternoon... See ye soon!

I do workshops for volunteers that will help you learn specifics and how to use our tools on Tuesdays at 5:30pm, come on by, the next class will be an intro to wheel building. I'm also from Santa Cruz and volunteered at the bike church for a few years, went to UCSC, worked at SCHS and soquel HS as well as Woodstocks downtown, it's a small town so we probably new some of the same people, stop by tuesday to say hi. Also we can talk about the Touring club I'm in.

I would be ultra-stoked to do a bike tour from sf to LA.  With enough notice, I can square away the vacation time to make it happen.  It takes about a week, yeah?

if we do about 80/day it'll take 5-6 days, we can do it in 4 if we hustle. 114 miles/day.
