Right now I'm using Tektro Oryx 992a brakes on my bike. I bought them because they were described as "cheap, and they work", which sounds pretty good.

And they do work, in that they stop the bike. But they squeal like crazy (I've tried all the standard remedies). And when I replace the pads with Kool Stops, there isn't enough post on the new pads to add in all of Tektro's adjustment hardware, so I'm pretty much limited to one (squealy) pad angle. (That is to say, the brakes require a longer post than Kool Stop provides.) And I seem to have broken some of that hardware, anyways.

Can anybody recommend a traditional-pull canti brake that is of good quality, easily adjustable, accepts kool-stops (or other high-quality pads), and is a good value for the money?

Is it possible that the dilemma you're having with the Kool Stop Pads is specific to the Kool Stops we stock in the shop?

If you're using the ones I'm thinking of, they don't have the bowled washers that allow for angle adjustment. But Kool Stop does make those pads.

The threaded posts on the Kool Stop U-Brake pads are even shorter than the Eagle Claws we normally carry.

You could upgrade to the Tektro CR720, or go with the new Shimano cantis, or the really nice new Dia Compe ones:

I also have oryx with Kool-stops on my tourer, they're the mtb ones mike posted but in salmon, they fit well and are pretty easy to toe, I've gotten them to stop squeeling but now I really don't care that much. VO sells brake pads they guarantee will never squeel.

Yes, Mike, that would be the problem. Either Dan or I will order some of the ones you posted for me and for the shop.

Dan, thanks for the brake suggestions. I'll keep them in mind if the pad upgrade doesn't fix things.
