I got back to find this in my inbox:

Hey Dan!

Hope everything back in LA and BW is rockin.  We're 2 weeks into our trip and I'm having a blast.  The Fuji has been holding up well until today when the down tube snapped at the bottom bracket.

So I was hoping I could get your take on what I should do.  Have you ever welded frames back together, or would a new frame be better.

Oh man, what a bummer.

He wrote me back and said he found a dude in South Indiana to weld it together.

It was a vintage Sports 10

(is the image fixed?)

wow I haven't seen many breaks there, looks like part of the lugging even split, I have a feeling that has been cracked there for a while.

Possibly heat related (too much) or a poorly done braze.  I remember "Little Fish" the incredibly anal first time ever Austrailain frame builder had a similar issue with her second bike frame she brazed:

I read her frame building account some time ago and it was the first thing I thought about when I saw that photo.
