I would like to carry my u-lock on my road bike without needing a separate bag for it but the lock rattles around in the mount (seems to be a design flaw) and is frigging annoying. Does everyone else just use a bag or is there a ulock+mount that doesn't result in irritating sounds? Or an alternative way of mounting it?

I'm a big fan of the backpack, because then I've got space for my spare tubes, tools, patch kit, pump, spare light, extra batteries, water bottle, snacks, sweater, etc. (I might be overdoing it, given that my typical ride is from my house to the beach and/or around West L.A.) Also a big fan of the used inner tube wrap / shim approach.

I completely support JB's kit, only I include:
- One forty-five caliber automatic - Two boxes of ammunition - Four days' concentrated emergency rations - One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills - One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible - One hundred dollars in rubles - One hundred dollars in gold - Nine packs of chewing gum - One issue of prophylactics - Three lipsticks - Three pair of nylon stockings.
Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all this stuff!"
I've been placing my u-lock in my belt on either my left or rear backside. It'll fit in the rear pockets of my Swrve(tm) branded trousers, jeans, short and knickers (I know, they have a limited selection of female wares)
Or, I've seen some folk lock over the top tube and under the down tube up by the steer tube.
Also, you could put some rubber o-rings that fit snugly around the u-lock shackle (the u-part) just where the two points connect with the lock cylinder part, thus reducing the rattle hellishness.

Every U lock mount I have ever installed at work has been jankity, hard to instal, and cheap, and many come back broken. No U lock manufacturer makes a good one to my knowledge.

I've been having this problem lately. I find myself carrying my messenger bag just to hold my lock and my wallet.
If anyone has any (good) ideas and is willing to crunch numbers, I'd be into sewin' something up.

I was thinking of making some panniers, including sewing a padded U-lock-shaped pocket into the top and hanging down next to the rack. The idea being that I could strap the panniers onto the bike very securely, then never take them off and the fabric would be inexpensive enough (and the strapping complex enough) that I wouldn't worry about them getting stolen.
So I'd be into sewin' something up, too.
This doesn't help Rach on her road bike, though.

Fabric Horse makes a little doo-dad that just slips onto your belt, if you wear a belt. I've been known to make cycling-specific utility belts. Anything can be made custom, of course. Hollar, gurrrrrrrl.

Portland bike work has very awesome belt loops that I had been using before I got this handmade hip pouch with belt loops on it... So ya... a) just throw it between your belt and jeans, yes, it holds... b) get a belt loop or get yourself a custom hip pouch... Youtube tutorial alll the way... c) get a chrome messenger bag that always comes with a u-lock slot... I feel fine with lock racks on bikes, the only problems is that when you wanna take it off (after a long time of using it)... It's most likely gonna be stucked... Just staying

I just use a small velcro strip to hold it in the rear rack. Or a bungee to tie it to the top of the rack...
