The superficiality of those articles was bothersome - it was good to see that they at least talked to experienced cyclists like you and Monica.

Louise and I had someone throw eggs at us the other week, riding back from Midnight Ridazz I think. Fortunately, they didn't really hit us.

Between the time I was interviewed and the article went to print, someone threw a bunch of french fries at me. The author also didn't mention the time I was hit by an underage driver (as I was stopped at a stop sign) without a drivers license who fled the scene of the accident, the time someone purposely backed up into me because they felt I was in their way or the time I was chased by three guys with plumbing pipes in a pickup truck.
Overall I thought the article was too sensationalistic and pretty superficial. She never wrote about feasible ways to prevent such incidents we had talked about.

someone through a beer can at me at the wetside ride. I chased the car and threw my water bottle as hard as i could, smacking the passenger in the face. OUCH. They then proceeded to chase me down in their car and threw a glass bottle at me. Then a fight ensued, i swung my bike at the bastard and punched him in the face. I was lucky enough to roll away unharmed, albeit scared.
i carry pepper spray now, a utility knife strapped to my socks to slash their tires, shatter rocks (small porcelain material that shatters glass) and a small 5 pound weight in my messenger bag to swing at their car.
my girlfriend throws golf balls at them.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
OMG. This is better material for Fox TV show, "World's Scariest Cycling Stories"!! These are the worst L.A. cycling articles I've ever seen. Jeannine Stein does nothing but feed into the HYSTERIA amongst the non-cycling (and often cycling) public that cycling is a dangerous, extreme sport.
Yes, I get yelled at all the time, and I've been egged once. Fuckers! But I certainly don't want that angle being talked up in the media.
FACT: Most (not all) accidents are caused by drivers not seeing a cyclist. FACT: Reflective clothing, lights, and vehicular cycling principles will ensure that you are seen most (not all) of the time.
