This is where we discuss taking the train up and riding down. To preempt many questions, here's a disclaimer from Big papa Shane:
My recommendation for this ride is a light steel road bike for comfort and durability with a tired and tested saddle (this ride is not the time to test out ANY new piece of gear). Spandex is recommended, as is a bucket of chamois butter and at least a 25mm wide tire, at least on the rear wheel for comfort and flat protection. You should bring the basic tools you always carry and Enzo and I will try to bring a slightly more extensive tool kit.
According to the experts if you can do 100 miles you can do 200, as long as you continue to eat every hour and stay hydrated. It's just more time in the saddle. We won't drop anybody but if you show up with your 52-14 geared fixie, with no bottle cages, wearing jeans, with a snickers bar and 50 cents in your pocket, without having ridden more than your 2 mile commute for the last month, don't stretch, refuse to pace-line, and then mash for the first 3 miles then bonk I won't have a lot of sympathy.
