My name is Joel,
I want to start a Pedi Cab fleet in Culver City.  I know next to nothing about the business, but just see the down town Culver area as a perfect place for good people on pedicabs taking other good people on rides.  My vision is to have this service to be created by and powered by the community and ideally as a not-for profit project that functions on donations, sponsorship and volunteers.  I'm looking to team with interested people who would want to make this thing happen with me.  Or at the very least any information that might help put wheels on this project.

my email is: joelkling@gmail.com
I have a blog on this project: http://pedicabcc.tumblr.com/

Thanks!!

Your first step would be to talk to city hall in Culver City to see what the rules regarding pedicabs are, and maybe to go talk to the CCPD. (The CCPD is getting a bit of a reputation as being less than welcoming to cyclists, so you'd want to start with a good relationship with them.)

The other thing to consider would be where you would take people in Culver City.

One of the main factors behind Culver City's resurgence is the installation of a number of multi-level parking garages downtown a few years ago, so people from outside the area can drive in, park, walk the few blocks of downtown, catch a movie and eat dinner, and then drive off again, so you'd need to figure out a route / plan for using the pedicabs.

You'd also want to be careful about going into L.A., as they've got their own sets of ordinances that have stymied prior attempts at pedicabs there.

See, e.g.:

Basically, it's a FANTASTIC idea, but there's a lot of cost (pedicabs are $2,500-$4,000 per) / effort / planning / insurance and red tape that you'd have to deal with in order to get it off the ground.

If that's the sort of project that you're interested in taking on, more power to you!

If you find you'd rather just contribute to an existing local cycling related volunteer-run, not-for-profit entity that exists to serve the community, well, we can provide an application. Smiley
