Hello everyone,

New to the forum and to the Bikerowave, but I love it!

A friend and I are fixing up a couple old steel frames and found a powdercoating place in Glendale/Eagle Rock who will do the job for $175.00 for one bike and an additional $50 per frame done in the same color. If four or five people want to do this, it could actually get pretty affordable.

Anyone interested? I suppose we could all settle on a color later.

Some of our volunteers got sandblasting and powdercoating for under $100.  Was the Glendale place going to include that?

Mega Powder Coating in El Monte will sandblast and powdercoat a frame for $75, so this isn't much of a deal.

Something tells me that MEGA of El Monte has higher prices now; I think that was close to two years ago that we had those frames painted, and if I recall the closer the color to a fence, awning frame or window bar color of black, grey, blue or brown the better.
I'm always open to hear about good deals on bike frame painting, but a decent paint job is a big part of equation and we want the job done right.

When we did Liam's Bike. We used AAA Powder Coating in Rosemead.

They did it for $75 including sand blasting.

Really Nice People!

Wow, those $75 prices sound pretty low! I'll look into AAA Powdercoating too. That price is well below everywhere I've been able to find.

The quote from the place in Glendale was for sandblasting and powdercoating. It's been a couple months and I don't remember why I contacted him specifically, but I believe I saw a good review for him on another bicycling forum.

The original $175 setup price wasn't great on it's own, but since each additional frame is only $50 that's where I thought it could become a good deal depending on how many people were interested. Once you have 4 frames, it's about $80 per frame, which seems reasonable to me.

Thanks for the recommendation on the AAA place, that sounds promising. I don't have any specific preference for the Glendale shop other than they seemed to be friendlier and more responsive than the other 2-3 shops I contacted.

Powder coating is a tricky thing I've discovered.  It is great when they get it right; with the right amount of gloss, and the finish is real smooth.  But it sucks when they get it wrong.  I've had some lousy powdercoating done.  There's a place in Carson (I think) called Bay Cities (Again, I think) who botched 3 of 5 frames I brought them.

The best powder coating job I had done was at Olympic Powdercoating, way the F down in Irvine.  Really smooth, nice work on the fenders, not waxy thick and $125 to do the job.  The downside was a limited pallet to chose from color wise, (they have a smaller array of colors than most) and the trek to Irvine.

Don't even get me started on the nickel plating fiasco...

I'd love to see a copper plated bike though, which would have to be immediately clear coated.

Interesting about the difficulty of powdercoating. Not as fool-proof as I would have liked.

I actually have some experience with painting and have the proper tools, and should probably just do a  paint job myself, but  the toughness of powdercoating sounded tempting. Also, not having to do it myself sounded great.

Bay Cities was one of the shops I tried to contact. They never responded to my calls or emails, so I just took them out of the running. Now I'm glad I did.

Irvine does sound far to me, although a nice job is a nice job.

After reading everyone's comments and searching yelp for reviews, I'm leaning towards Triple A in El Monte. People seem to be consistently happy with them. Or, just throwing some rattle-can paint on there and calling it done for a couple years until I've got more time to deal with it!

Ok, called Triple-A Coating in El Monte as recommended, and they still charge $75.00 for stripping, masking, and coating for a flat in-stock color.

I think the group buy idea just died. Thank you for the information everyone!

I think copper spray paint was the #1 choice for bikes in Amsterdam ca. 2009. They sold all different metals for €4/can in the Waterlooplein.

If that's not your style, may I suggest holographic contact paper. You can do a whole bike for less than $6, plus it looks great when you're tripping.

Went with Triple - A Powder Coating in El Monte as recommended.

They were extremely friendly, stuck with the $75.00 price, and the frame looks great - no runs, lugs all show nicely, and no rough spots. Also, they sandblasted and masked everything really nicely. It looks brand new!

Thanks for the advice everyone! Now it's time to get this thing set up.

Thanks for letting us know.  I'm probably going to head out there myself in a few weeks.

That looks really sharp! Nice work!

Look at all those fender / rack mount brazeons just waiting to be put to use.
