Thing is, that image is a cartoon with ye olde-time cars and clothing.  I'd prefer a harder hitting poster showing the damage a car door can do.  If drivers knew the story of the cyclist in Brooklyn who swerved to avoid a car door and was hit by a bus, and saw the photo of the body lying by the bus, I think they'd pay more attention when opening their doors.

Keeping cyclists out of the door zone matters too.  Moar sharrows pleez.

@gus, 10x17 b+w isn't too bad.
@rach, agreed but sometimes being too vivid just angers people, it makes them feel guilty which angers them more, the cartoon is a catchy image that may get stuck in ppls heads without them immediately trying to think of something more pleasant. perhaps next time they go to open the door they'd remember that catchy image they've been thinking about and check first.

Enzo, I disagree.   If you don't shock people, if you fail to convince them that it is absolutely, flat-out, downright dangerous to open their doors without looking then they don't take it seriously.  When I was doored (filtering between cars, shame on me) I actually heard a pedestrian laugh.

Have you seen Mayor V's PSA for the "Give me 3" campaign?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnLViXcG7mE

It's utterly dull, wishy-washy to the extreme, and instantly forgettable.  I really like the Transport for London ad:

Is it uncomfortable to watch that cyclist hit the car?  Yeah.  I cringe every time I see it.  But if temporarily upsetting people with the image of a cyclist getting hit by a car is what it takes for the ad, and therefore the lesson, to be memorable then that's fine by me.

in a related note, as bike lanes have grown, backlash to bike lanes is increasing;
