I'm trying to get my hands on a 27" 1-1/4 single speed rear wheel for what will someday be the greatest bike ever made, or at least the shiniest. We're talking glitter and rhinestones on the crank.

For a new wheel I'm looking at $60-80. Ouch.

I can build one with used parts for about $40-50. Still more than I hoped to pay, because in addition to this being the shiniest bike it will also be a jaw-dropping bargain.

I found one on Craigslist for $20, but it needs the bearings and axle replaced (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/bik/1945693359.html). Is this more trouble than it's worth? Based on online reports it doesn't look too complicated, but I've been deceived by the internet before.

Of course the last option is that one of you happens to have this exact wheel just lying (or more likely rolling) around and is willing to part with it for a reasonable sum that may or may not include money $$$.

AND while I have your attention, any opinions on what grit steel wool I should use to remove 40 year old paint from a frame without scratching the chrome underneath?

Replacing the bearings and axle isn't a big deal.  Our bearings cost 5 cents each and we have axle kits for $10 (I think).  Open it up, take out the old stuff, clean it with the biodiesel, squirt in new grease and reseal it.

However, if the races on the hub are damaged or too pitted, then the hub is toast.  You wouldn't be able to tell until opening it up.

I've got a 27" wheelset off an old schwinn ss conversion at home. I know one of the wheels is tacoed, but I'm thinking it was probably the front. Ill check when I go home in a couple hours!
