I've put a lot of thought into what I'm going to do with my summer. I decided I wanted to try a dynamic and fun way to bring positive change to my community. I spent a bit of time outlining what I wanted to do as far as setting up a free school. I'd really like the support of any of you who are willing. I know how much time many of you already devote to the BRW but you are probably the most adept at getting the community organized around something. I posted my ideas in my blog and would like to get the ball rolling on this asap. http://enzomatic-rants.blogspot.com/2010/06/west-la-free-school.html

I know my way around thread and needle and sewing machine pretty well, if this actually happens, i'd be totally down for teaching some sort of sewing class

I would love to help organize, but have too much to do as is, however I would like to help out if I have a skill that is teachable.

I think at this point I'm just going to get a whatever amount of work shops put together as I can and get a schedule going. I think getting a few work shops to actually happen will help this thing get going. Lucas, I'm sure we can figure something out, maybe computer stuffs or macrame.

I see you've already got a sewing teacher signed up but I'm up for TAing that class, since I can sew everything. Mending/tailoring seems like it could be a good one-part class, and doesn't necessarily require a machine. I'm not quite at the point of strapping my Singer onto my Schwinn and cruising around.
Assuming of course that I'm in town when this goes down.

I'm down, the first free school class is this friday, after that I'll be talking to people about scheduling other classes, I just want to prove to myself that I can pull one off. dylan I think we should focus on starting with one class where you teach people the basics of how to operate a sewing machine, then we can find something incredibly easy to put together. from there we could see about a regular class or sewing circle or the like, from there we can open up a sewing co-op and no one will ever toss their torn pants away again.

I've been talking with the owners of Fabric Planet (421 Lincoln Blvd) about doing the same thing. They're already offering kid's sewing classes and we're trying to get a regular adult class going in the fall. They've got a great space, a separate room in the back of the store that's currently being renovated. They might be up for some collaboration.
There are a few sewers in NOLA who regularly meet at bars and do on-the-spot mending. I always like a business model with alcohol built in.
