Hi.

The Santa Monica Library (SMPL) and SMC's Associated Students would like us to do a safety and maintenance workshop on MAY 22ND.  This means we'd have to bring a workstand + toolset to 2 locations.  I would like a couple of hands on deck for each shift, so that we have 3 ppl total helping out.

10-12pm - Main Library, Santa Monica and 6th
1-3pm - Fairview Branch, Ocean Park and 21st

Those in attendance will be of all ages, and some will even bring their bikes for a checkup.  So basically think of this as a quick lecture on our part (25 minute crash course on the anatomy of a bike and safe riding tips), then we get to do some hands-on work on people's bikes.

They'll have snacks for everyone and we will be giving out prizes provided by the SMPL and SMC-AS.  Who's free that weekend and ready, willing, and able to lend a helping hand?

- Mihai.

Are you sure their Earth Day weekend is May 22nd? We are committed to doing the Earth Day festivities at Redondo Beach on April 24, Saturday which will require stands, toolsets and a tent. Please confirm that SM's Earth Day is for some reason in May.

I'm confirming that the date and the request -  Grin

SMPL are asking us to do outreach at two libraries on May 22nd. If we can get enough member/volunteers to do this it would be great! They are aware that's a lot, so we may have to scale back.

I'm definitely up for it.

EricW

PS - Nobody know when Earth Day is - used to be the Saturday nearest April 19th, it 's now any nice late spring day.

To confirm, this event is on May 22nd, and it seems that it will be a big one, with more support from the city of Santa Monica than I thought.  More details soon.

Leap day!  "Leap day is punishment for being born at the wrong time" day.  In your era they instituted the draft just so that other people could know what it was like to be born on February 29th.

Of course, Ayla Stern, co-founder of the Bikery, was born on April 1st.  That's possibly worse.  Everyone wish her happy birthday tomorrow.

This event is becoming more than just a "cutesy" how-to-fix-yer-bike tutorial.  Santa Monica Spoke is working on organizing public workshops at the Main Library location where there will be roundtables on the following topics:

  • Bike Blvds, Street Closures, Ciclovia
  • Bicycle Infrastructure: Ask the City (featuring City Staff)
  • Safe Routes to School / Bike It! Day
  • What the LUCE plan brings for Cyclists (featuring City Staff)

So, as far as the BRW's presence there, I'd like at least 2 helpers for each location (Main Library, then Fairview Branch).

Mihai -

Thanks for organizing... I am up for this. It's really close for me. I can probably do the whole event, certainly the start at the main Library.  Let me know the details...

Dunno what you mean about registering? Does that mean they know about my overdue library book? police

So far I have 2 people signed up for the Main Library, Steve (morning shift) and Eric - who else wants in for the afternoon shift?  Don't think of it as work, think of it as an outdoor festival with lots of freebies.  Now do you feel enticed to come??

I have to run down to Fairview Branch from 1-3pm to do a workshop there, so we'll need at least another person covering the Main library.

I will come out and take pictures and hang out and talk to police officers and city officials about stolen bikes and what to do when I spot a stolen bike and seller. That issue should be dealt with. Cheesy

Michael...
There seems to be a cut and paste theme happening here.
Will you also be willing to help us with outreach as well as "take pictures?"

I would like to help out with this, it is my shift day though so I can go there if someone wants to take over for me at the shop. If for some reason I'm needed at the shop then whoever goes has to bring back freebies for me too.

I'd be more than willing to come help out, preferably for the morning shift, although if more help is needed in the afternoon I'm available then too, so long as i can make it back to BRW for my 4-7 shift. If any transportation is needed for tools, stands, signage, etc., I can also help out with that.
