Because people can applaud or smite you using the little buttons on the left of the screen when they pull up a forum thread.

It is perhaps the funniest and most passive-aggressive feature this forum offers.

it's the no good deed goes unpunished aspect of BRW.  take a look at who has the worst negative to positive ratios.  generally, they are the people who stick their necks out and get the most done.  that said, there is no 1:1 correlation between the ratio and the good works of the person whose ratio it is.  otherwise i would be god given my +0:-7 ratio.  it's a coward's tool.  it would be used with greater care and probably less frequently if we could actually know who is smiting and who is applauding us.  passive aggressive indeed.  i'd like to see it abolished.

Back in the day we had a karma war (before all these old farts were involved.)  That was real fun.  I just applauded everyone here, but I'm thinking of going on a smite binge for fun.  I don't think people every took the karma seriously . . . at least I never did.

You can smite as many as you want in a row, you just can't smite anyone twice.

SMITED!

two things:

1) DAMN IT!! my perfect lack of applause is gone, but at least i got two smites to almost make up for it.  i smell a mathematician.  something about those perfect fractions.

2) you can smite the same person multiple times, but you have to wait an hour between smites.  i learned that when i was arguing with a mathematician about t-shirts.
