Got this message from Kent at LACBC. Thought it was worth posting.

-ss

Santa Monica planners are reviewing the recent changes made to Ocean Park Blvd. which added bike lanes, among other things.  There are likely to be many who object to loosing the car lanes, so it is important for those of us who support the new configuration to speak up.

Be sure to fill out the survey mentioned below, and attend the Nov. 24 meeting if you are so inclined.

Kent

Monday, November 24 – 7:00 to 8:30
Virginia Avenue Park, 2200 Virginia Avenue

Neighborhood Community Meeting
Ocean Park Boulevard Pilot Project Update

Responding to a desire to increase safety for drivers and pedestrians, Ocean Park Boulevard was restriped this past winter between Lincoln Boulevard and 25th Street with one lane of traffic in each direction and a center turn lane to provide fewer lanes of traffic for people to traverse and resulted in more overnight parking and new bike lanes. This change was made on a trial basis and now the city will have the opportunity to decide whether to maintain the current arrangement.

The City has spent the past few months measuring the impacts of the restriping and evaluating whether the changes have addressed Santa Monicans’ concerns.  Are there fewer accidents?  How is bus service affected?  What changes have occurred on neighborhood streets?

Transportation Management staff would like your opinion and is surveying residents, visitors, business owners and employees on the redesigned street. Please contact transportation.management@smgov.net or 310/458-8291 or to receive a copy of the survey or take it online at http://www.smgov.net/opbsurvey.

A community meeting is also scheduled, at which we would like to:
·         Review the recent changes on Ocean Park Boulevard,
·         Provide an update on safety, traffic and feedback received regarding the changes,
·         Receive feedback on the pilot project and what should be done next, and
·         Encourage community participation in planning for this area.

The park is accessible to people with disabilities and is served by Big Blue Bus local Line 7 and the Cross Town Ride.

Got this from OPA -

OPA would like to "improve" Ocean Park Bvld. between Lincoln and Main street.  It's a multi million dollar project to make it "nicer". At the last meeting I went to, they took a straw poll and public comment. It was overwhelming in favor of eliminating the Ocean Park bike lane. There were only a few bike helmets in the room.

If you use this bike lane you need to show some support for Bikes at this meeting.   Without some bike support, it may go away....

Here's the announcement:

City Hall's Transportation Management Department would like your feedback on the recent changes to Ocean Park Boulevard east of Lincoln (please do not reply to this email with your comments; instead attend the meeting or complete the survey as outlined below)

Make sure you guys fill out the survey (http://www.smgov.net/opbsurvey) if you ride Ocean Park or want to chime in.  It seems as if the city planners are almost certain that the changes they've made will eventually become popular, but it doesn't hurt to support the cause.  The (old and scraggly) naysayers at the meeting were definitely fired up, so if you support the Ocean Park Bl redesign, speak up and balance out those bastards!

  Cheesy

For cyclists, the addition of a bike lane
has been a welcomed change.
When Scott Sing lived on the eastern edge
of Ocean Park Boulevard, he often avoided
the busy street for his bike commutes to
Downtown. Now that he has moved to
Venice, Sing said that he wishes the changes
were made sooner.
“I’m confused at the objection to it,” Sing
said. “It seems to be about people who can’t
get through in their cars fast enough, but in
the name of safety, it seems to be a welcome
tradeoff.”
