Dude, you know you're getting old when you watch that video and all you can think is "Where are their helmets?"

I think they should have made a rendezvous. Alone and now together thanks to Hutchinson tires. I hated that they didn't even try to art direct the broken glass sequence a bit by moving the shards around. Just a sad second camera angle. Far too long with no connection at all.

well, i think what they were trying to say is that hutchinson tires are so freaking amazing that you can run over glass delicately enough that the shards lay undisturbed, that you can run through puddles without mussing your skirt, and the tires have the magical ability to get you from the williamsburg bridge to the jacob javits center and back again faster than a crease can form in your tight hipster pants.
the magnetic polarity the tires form to keep the buses from squishing him is pretty impressive too.
(it IS a fun ad, thanks for posting it kwang!)

At first look it's great. I love the brushing past buses part, everyone should try that at least once, makes you feel superior (soaking up invisible energy from the passengers maybe?).
So let's get down to critique.
The ad is too long, especially since no story is really told here. I mean, cmon, you have 4 full minutes to work with, that's a short film. I don't understand why this format is chosen. Either stick to a 30sec to 1 minute TV ad and cut back and forth between the 2 characters without reason, or gimme a story! I need plot!
Both cool characters have no helmets. Also, for the sake of my sanity, I wish that "hardcore" cyclists won't always have to rock the messenger bag, calf tattoos, and functionally useless shades. But if this ad makes the business types that drive solo to work everyday want to get a fixie and ride, then more power to Hutchinson.

I don't want to defend this as it really does not matter one way or another. However, I do not think it is intended as a typical 30 second tv spot, but rather a promotional video for trade show booth for example. In that sense, I think it works. As for the lack of interaction between two characters, I actually like it that they do not meet at the end. Implication is good enough. No need for Hollywood style ending. Life is full of inconclusive events. He does pass by her parked bike though. Helmets? I personally do not care one way or another. We should be free to choose. Messenger get-up? They were obviously going for maximum contrast between the two characters. Anyway, it's all in fun.

Without the bringing together in the end, I still feel it fails to draw me in. If it's for a booth, it's just motion in the background as nothing builds. The girl is moving so slow and seems listless in her energy. The guy, they give away some of the best shots right at the beginning. It doesn't build to some visual climax. I think in commercials you have a wonderful opportunity to say a lot visually in a very short amount of time. This drags like a crude Japanese Kareioke video, with some cute girl wondering around a sailboat with the song "Born to Be Wild" playing. It's gotta build man! You want to be drawn in. I biked the other links you had about the guys riding hard and fast and doing their tricks better. This seems like a "reel builder" for someone who wanted to do a spot and hopefully become a director. He/she may pull it off because so many people seem into it. But then again, this kind of spot in a way, is the easiest to do. Just getting pretty shots of people doing (fill in blank with product here). Like stock footage. I clearly have an opinion if you haven't figured that out yet... Sorry. It is nice to see a bike tire company trying at least. It's kind of like if Nitto made some spots about their stems and seatposts. Now that would be cool. I can envision the shots already.... tiny remote cameras filming the engraved "nitto" stems up close reflecting the city as the rider heads off for a rendezvous with his sweetheart...

if they were trying to do a contrast between riders thing they should of made some more characters I really thought they were going to almost run into each other and then both stop to show how that the tires have some good grip or something of the sort. The whole anti-bus squasher thing is pretty cool.
