IAN HIBELL, 1934-2008

It is with heavy hearts that we report the death of world-famous bicycle traveler Ian Hibell (HIGH-bell), who was killed August 23 in a crash with a hit-and-run driver while bicycling in Greece. We at Adventure Cycling are extremely proud and honored to have on display in our office Ian's Argos expedition bike, which he pedaled from Norway to South Africa in the mid-1970s. He traveled from his home in England early in 2007 to present us with the bike (see Adventure Cyclist, March 2007). Ian was a man short in stature who rode tall in the saddle. Among other milestones he achieved, Ian was the first known cyclist to ride the length of the Western Hemisphere, including a traverse of Panama's swampy Darien Gap. Watch remarkable footage of the feat here:
