So I've just acquired a lovely new frame, with some minor chips in the paint, but whatever, I can deal.
What I'm not so sure I can deal with, is a rattling in the top tube. It sounds like something is rattling around *IN* the top tube. I'm guessing it maybe won't be so bad when it's all built up since I won't as easily be able to pick up the frame and shake it like a rattle, but I'm also afraid it'll just provide a constant jingling from road vibrations.
I'm probably going to bring it to the bike store at some point this weekend to get their opinion, but also thought I would put it to the BW community. Anybody else have any experiences like this?

the top tube is not a normal place for rattles in my experience. i'm wondering if the sound might just be coming from somewhere else, but amplifying into the top tube? you could try taking the seatpost or fork out and shake 'er around to see if anything comes out.

I was hoping it would be the seat post or downtube. At least there there are the holes for the mounting bolts for the water bottles. I thought maybe something slipped in there, but I'm pretty sure its the top tube. It's only the frame itself. No fork, no seatpost, nothing installed. Except a BB...
Good suggestion, though.
any other ideas?

I've had a bike, somewhere in my past, that had a similar problem. I determined it was in the top tube and in fact was a bit of flux or metal scrap that someone remained in the tube when it was being assembled. I could see it, sticking out once when I'd stripped the frame of parts and looked into the top of the head tube where the top tube connected. There was a vent hole in the top tube and the bit of metal nestled in the hole, to big to fall out. If your frame is steel it's not a bad idea to coat/line the inside of the frame tubes with something called frame saver. It's a sticky oil designed to protect the metal tubing from rust. That just might deaden or stop whatever it is that's rattling around in there. OR, you could get a can of spray on foam insulation, and if you have a vent hole in the seat tube or head tube where the top tube meets those tubes, you could spray some in. It would ad no more weight than your frog headlight and would make your bike silent as the errant bit of whatever would be preserved in the expanding foam. This would have to be done carefully, as the foam really expands--about 10:1 times so only a bit would need to be injected in. It would also turn your bike into a flotation device you could easily stow beneath the seat in front of you.... I joke. But, this would work.

I would use a stethescope to pinpoint the correct tubewith the slag inside. Then figure out if shugo's foam is easily injected, if not, maybe drill a hole big enough... superglue, foam, cram some paper in there. Do something, or else you shall be tormented till the day it dies...

I've looked around but can't seem to see a vent hole or anything like. I'm scared to drill my own hole though.... I've kind of put it on the back burner for now since I don't really have all the parts to build it up yet anyways but thanks for all the help!

You'd have to pull out the fork/steer tube and you'd have to pull out the seatpost. Is it a steel frame? If it's steel, there should be holes... I attached a picture...

Yeh the fork and seat post are out. I definitely do not have a hole that looks like that. Does the bikerowave have a drill? And is there a particular person there I should trust to help me drill a hole into this thing?

Is your bike frame steel? Aluminum? When can you bring it in?
