Dennis was a historian and tireless bicycle advocate in the area. He curated an exhibit on the Wheels of Change bicycle exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of History a few years ago and has been promoting the rebirth of the Horace Dobbins Cycleway, a bicycle path from Pasadena to downtown that was started in the 1890's. A few years ago he got the city to close the 110 freeway to cars so cyclists could ride on it to raise awareness for the cycleway. It was such a COOL event.

Dennis will be sorely missed in the cycling community.

Sunday, July 27, 9 AM

Pasadena Museum of History
470 W Walnut Street (corner of Orange Grove Blvd.), Pasadena

A memorial service will be held on the scenic grounds of the Pasadena Museum of History, one of Dennis' favorite places. After the service a group of friends will travel up Angeles Crest Highway to pay their respects to Dennis.

BTW- Is it any coincidence that a few days after Dennis passed away a huge sinkhole developed on the 110 freeway?

So I assumed "a group of friends will travel up Angeles Crest Highway" was a rike bide but Colin from LACBC said he thought it was a motor vehicle event since Dennis was also a motorcycle and Saab club member.

Subsequently I got the following message from a group email from someone who seemed to be involved with the planning but I don't know.

In any event, I'll be going to the memorial service and I'm up for any memorial BICYCLE ride afterwards if anyone wants to join me. I've always wondered about The Cycleway Cafe but never been so that does sound like fun.

....it sounded like there would be a motor vehicle convoy. I believe that Newcomb's Ranch is 27 mi beyond the 210 exit for angeles crest highway.

The group plans to stop to get something to eat, and then to scatter dennis's ashes in the forest.

I had to get permission thru channels to his sister to invite a bagpiper to play that morning. And Tim asked for her about a member of the cloth -- the Unitarian church is across the street and their first service isn't until 10 am -- so it would be hard to say no. If that didn't work, I suggested that he get in touch with Liz and Shay of CICLE and talk to the priests etc that participated in Good Sam's Blessing of the Bicycles during bike to work week in May.

After the ceremonies I plan to catch a Goldline train@ the memorial park station and ride to the CYCLEWAY CAFE from the Highland Park station. It seems like an appropriate thing to do.

If you haven't been to this cafe, you are in for a great treat. There are wonderful photos on the walls, and their dark chocolate latte is to die for.

Ciao,

PS I inquired about the possibility of videotaping the services, but have not yet heard back on that question. Tim is going to try to get the clip of Huell Howser interviewing Dennis.

I hear there's a memorial BICYCLE ride being planned for Sept/Oct.

If you're in the area, you stop at Cycleway Coffee and check out the photos. Apparently when Dennis heard there was a new coffee shop called Cycleway, he donated several large photographs of the original Horace Dobbins Cycleway. It was an elevated wood bike path that started at the old Green Hotel in Pasadena and headed towards downtown. Unfortunately, they only completed 2.5 miles before the project was scrapped. Pretty cool pics.

Hopefully one day, Dennis' dream will be fulfilled and the cycleway will be completed.
