Aha - no - I don't do rides before noon. I was just making this suggestion since not too many people are up for a 50 mile ride with good climbs, and also because I am procrastinating.
Your second ride is tough - lots of hills and some big climbs. All that territory in the mountains will be climbing or rolling hills which are tough too. The first ride is a good one . . . urban, but who cares so much about that?

Tom, That first route is actually the same route that La Grange (and others) do on Sunday mornings... http://www.lagrange.org/rides_sun.htmI'd be totally down to do that second one you posted, I hear fernwood is fun. I'm headed out of town until the 6th (fyi, i'm not gonna be volunteering on Monday, I'll be 300 miles away...). So you guys can have fun before I come back for more! Oh.. and if you're interested here's a gnarly route, yah, i said gnarly..... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=3037307849119398050,34.031920,-118.463170%3B9582840463511379705,34.015350,-118.490087%3B18369636338543141037,34.013693,-118.497632%3B4410097227518603228,34.040130,-118.579050%3B12020898127364892740,34.085817,-118.600242%3B139676973549385032,34.072310,-118.687370%3B7842480312584579221,34.101142,-118.660265%3B17861515002542366106,34.098201,-118.652978%3B16525824003897091930,34.039904,-118.580553%3B12887342529906694641,34.016050,-118.489210%3B3037307849119398050,34.031920,-118.463170&saddr=Nebraska+Ave+%4034.031920,+-118.463170&daddr=Colorado+Ave+%4034.015350,+-118.490087+to:Ocean+Ave+%4034.013693,+-118.497632+to:Pacific+Coast+Hwy+%4034.040130,+-118.579050+to:S+Topanga+Canyon+Blvd+%4034.085817,+-118.600242+to:Piuma+Rd+%4034.072310,+-118.687370+to:Mulholland+Hwy+%4034.101142,+-118.660265+to:34.037013,-118.636551+to:Pacific+Coast+Hwy+%4034.039904,+-118.580553+to:7th+St+%4034.016050,+-118.489210+to:Nebraska+Ave+%4034.031920,+-118.463170&mra=dme&mrcr=5,6&mrsp=7&sz=12&via=1,9&dirflg=h&sll=34.092473,-118.570633&sspn=0.172296,0.355682&ie=UTF8&z=12

I hate to say it, but I'd certainly feel a bit better if we started out with more like 30-40 mile rides, especially if they include climbing. That first route looked pretty good to me. Am I right in thinking that ride would be a bit easier than the second Topanga one?

What Tom and I did on Sunday was hard, and if you haven't done some serious climbing in the past it would be a hard one to finish. One thing we could also to is take a flat route down to the end of Venice, back up to San Vicente, then up Mandivelle Canyon. Mandivelle Canyon is a dead end, so if you can't climb it to the top there's no worries, then maybe do a small hill through the Palisades and back to BRW.

that could be done, but on the route i posted through nichols canyon is really pretty simple. there is only one serious climb, and that's up nichols, but it starts off slow, then ascends for probably about two to two 1/2 miles up to mulholland. it's the kind of climb i would do on my old motobecane in a 44/23 gearing, and while it was tough on that, anything less would be pretty run of the mill. then once up on mulholland there are good views to either side, designated scenic areas to regroup, and pretty decent riding. my vote is for that one as it's kind of a historic LA ride.
the one e-razzle and i did last weekend was brutal, especially in the heat, but i am very happy i finished. i had to add another 8 miles and two more climbs to my normal workout today because last sunday's ride had such a positive effect on me beyond the grand views and such. i'd like this to be a weekly thang to get some of us aspiring roadies progressively more fit while maintaining a sense of adventure and of not being in a completely urban environment. i think if we do about 30 miles this week, it will leave it's mark and we'll all feel confident to build on it from there.
so that's my two cents. i actually wouldn't mind checking out mandeville canyon, i've been meaning to, but i've made my case, i'll let all ya'll who'd like to ride this weekend decide. it's a damn shame mandeville doesn't connect to mulholland, it comes so close to it.
- oh, and e-rock, that one you posted is gnar. maybe i'll be up for it when you get back. also, i had a hornet fly into my jersey on a descent this evening, i still don't know if it stung me, but it seems to be a trend as of late.

@tom, HAH, seriously finishing a 30+mph descent and finding a hornet hanging around in your jersey is never a pleasant discovery... My only recommendation for doing Nichols is to do it early, Mulholland will probably get scary later in the day.
Either way I'm totally down to ride in any number of directions to keep this ride happening!

In general Saturday is probably better for me...Show of hands for Saturday vs. Sunday? If I'm the only Sat person then obviously keep going with the Sunday plan.

So...I got distracted by the holiday weekend. But now I want to ride!
Ride this Sunday? I'd like to do some climbing again, but I can't do E-rock's crazy climbing yet.

i would love to, but a friend of mine i haven't seen in about 3 years is docking in long beach sunday and i'm gonna go hang out with him for a while. he plays drums on a cruise ship and only has about 6 hours free. i'd like to start this back up next sunday though.
