What do we need more of?
Are things priced appropriately?

I go first.

Desperately need:
- brake cable ferrules

Need:
- long reach caliper brakes (the old stuff we have, if any doesn't provide enough braking power)
- single speed (bmx) freewheels of different sizes (16-20T)
- another cable cutter

Pricing:
- the $40 Cateye headlights we sell are $35 in stores, so we should drop price or stock something more affordable instead

700 size inner tubes with standard valves and/or the aluminum shims for presta valves to help them fit hubs drilled for standard hubs.

Chain lube

Bottom brackets

Plastic tire levers (sale) / metal tire levers (shop)

BMX freewheels (as Mihai noted) / single cog front cranks / shorter chains (Every third person that comes in seems to be converting to singlespeed, it would be cool if we could just sell them a kit with the necessary bits.  Fixed gear / flip-flop hubs are a little pricy, but a basic singlespeed kit should be doable.)

Bikerowave logoed stickers / keyrings /  tchotchkes.  (I know, this is pretty ridiculous, but it would be an easy revenue generator, as people love their souvenirs.)

An updated price list for the door (e.g. more on how much used stuff costs).

Threaded brake pads.

At least a small selection of helmets.  (Not to sound like anybody's mom, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a handful available.)

Also, could we put together a few basic "build kits" that would allow people wanting to build a bike here to do so without having to make multiple trips to the LBS?  (e.g. look at the frames hanging up, and put together a list of the standard parts they'd need to get back in running order, price it, and then offer credits/debits for bits they already had or bits they needed)  For the person who just wants to pick something basic out and put it together, it would be  great if we could offer a one-stop shop.

Those are my suggestions.  YMMV.

do we have long stem 700 tubes? If not, I would like a few.

What about tire levers? the plastic kind.

do we need more chain oil?

JB,

"build kits", I blike this idea !  Cool

"tchotchkes", I blike this idea if we can do it "more sustainable" such as re-screening t-shirts or, how about re-glazing coffee mugs?

In terms of Tchotchkes, how about some Bikerowave helmets?  Do a sticker run (with soy based ink if we're being really sustainable), and then slap them on some helmets ordered from Helmets R Us.

They only sell to organizations, and they sell for $4-$10 per, which means we could sell them for $15 each and still make a decent profit.  Like this one, which is CSPC certified and meets the ASTM standard, and can be used for biking, skateboarding, roller derby, etc., and costs $8.45+ shipping/logo stickers /etc..

Anybody interested?

Mihai,
We got some ferrules.  I bought a few bottles on ebay.
I'm all for selling some long reach brakes as this seems to be challenge #1 when guests bring in their 27" wheeled frame and want to put on their new deep V 700c rims--
I'm sensing that with Gern being very busy in the lighting world, things are at a bit of a standstill in ordering, am I accurate?
Maybe the build kit would be a set price for what ends up being a rebuild--new cables, housings, pads, bar tape, tubes, tires--maybe.
1" threaded headsets would be on my list as well.
We do all need to be carrying around at least business cards for the bikerowave, all of us.  I'm always telling people about it, some actually show up.  But how great it will be (cuz it's gonna happen) to hand someone a business card that's got all our info, times location, web and phone.  All real pretty like.  It's a great op for the creative graphiques to be making some.
How about spoke cards maybe for the wave?   You come work on your bike you get a spoke card?
T-shirts, stickers all with some new labels that look less like a pool cleaning service logo and a lot more creative.

re chain lube,
We were discussing it before http://forum.bikerowave.org/index.php/topic,1043.msg5141.html#msg5141 ,

I looked at my 'biodegradable' chain lube, it's made by Motorex of Switzerland, so far, I bike it good.

Stickers and little trinkets w/ our logo on them, I'm all for it.

In regards to BRW-branded helments, I bike the Model 17 from Helmets-R-Us.  The one they have pictured w/ all the logo samples is supa-dorky though, we have to make sure they'd let us stamp our logo on the cooler models.  Order form says "480 helmets minimum", isn't that quite an investment?  At $8.45 a piece, that'd be about $4,000.

Mihai - I was thinking we'd order about 30 helmets (minimum order 24), and then put our own stickers on, rather than going for a 480 helmet order, which would be overkill until we set up our non-profit and go national.

Vistaprint.com offers a DIY sticker generator for some very cheap and basic labels, so if you wanted some stickers like this:

http://bp0.blogger.com/_pPHnKNqTFdA/SFyuVzI3xcI/AAAAAAAAAAM/ygzdvhgNDAk/s1600-h/bikerowave.bmp

It would cost $3.99 for 280 stickers, and we could throw in 3 or 4 with each helmet, and have plenty left over to hand out.  They offer cheap business cards as well ($6 for 250).  (Obviously the logo, print design, etc. can be changed, that's just one that looked semi-cool off the basic template.  I know there are some better graphics/design folks than yours truly.)

An order of 30 Model 17 helmets, plus Bikerowave stickers and business cards from Vistaprint should be less than $300.  ($4k would be a bit steep for a trial investment.)

What do you all think?

David_F - re chain lube, if you're looking for something effective and biodegradable, apparently olive oil works fine and is pretty cost effective.

I realize that olive oil is very healthly and tasty, but as mentioned in a previous thread regular vegetable oils do go rancid and may have other issues.

I'm not thinking buying 30 helmets and putting BRW stickers on them is a good investment, in my opinion.  Merino wool jerseys, on the other hand, with a vintage Bikerowave logo--now that's something I can get behind!  Jersey porn!
