Kryptonite has once again released its Top 10 Worst Cities for Bike Theft.

Without further ado for 2007:

1. Philadelphia, PA
2. Chicago, IL
3. New York City, NY
4. San Francisco, CA
5. Tucson, AZ (tie)
Portland, OR (tie)
7. Denver, CO
8. New Haven, CT
9. Cambridge, MA
10. Austin, TX

Kryptonite's marketing manager Donna Tocci said she was shocked by the data.

"When we did the compilation, there wasn’t even a city close to Philly," Tocci said. "Not even close."

Kryptonite compiles its list from its regional managers, hundreds of shop visits, input from colleges and universities, customer service interactions and data from police in various cities.

ah, the illadel, the land where the killers dwell, how I miss thee.
But, Tuscon? New Haven? Cambridge, MA but not Boston? I wouldn't have guessed, except the Cambridge thing does make sense because cops go around breaking locks and nabbing bikes that aren't locked up on proper parking spots, if that counts as theft. I think it counts as douchery.

All college towns. U of A, Yale, and... MIT? You'd think the geniuses would keep a lock on things. "I got your bike! How you like them apples?"

It would be way more fun to say "I'm not schocked" because I am from Philly and I that makes me and the city seem tough....but wow. Homicides and sports fan related deaths I expect high numbers but I never really noticed a lot of bike theft or bikes there to begin with. Maybe Philly whines more as a city than most so it just seems bad.

Then again I used SEPTA to go everywhere so what do I know biking in Philly other than its cold and dark and would never want ride more than 2 blocks in any direction away from Broad and Pine.
